Amazon Backend Keywords (2026 Guide)
On this page
What are backend keywords?
Backend search terms are hidden keywords in Seller Central that help Amazon match shopper queries without showing those words on the public listing. Use them for synonyms, spelling variants, and relevant phrases you could not fit in the title or bullets.
Rules in 2026
- Do not repeat words already in title, bullets, or description.
- No ASINs, competitor brands you do not own, or subjective claims.
- Prefer lowercase, single spaces, no commas needed in modern search terms fields.
- Stay relevant - irrelevant keywords can hurt conversion and ranking quality.
How to research
Gather candidates with the Amazon Keyword Tool, then keep leftover high-relevancy phrases for backend. See Amazon keyword research and add keywords to listings.
Byte limits
Amazon enforces a byte limit on search terms. Measure with the free Byte Counter and guide at Byte Counter how-to.
Placement tips
Order higher-value unique terms first. Revisit after catalog changes. Pair with title optimization so front-end and backend work together.
